Edmonton, DATE – July 15, 2014. Al Rashid Education Foundation (AREF) is pleased to announce the official launch of its activities as the Canadian scholarship foundation fully dedicated to support Muslim students who wish to pursue post-secondary education. AREF will be using the profits from a recently established endowment fund to disburse scholarships beginning January 2015.
AREF hopes that offering scholarships to Muslim students will encourage them to develop their educational, leadership, artistic and athletic potentials. “As active partners within the Canadian society, Muslims feel a sense of duty to build a strong community of highly educated future leaders. These leaders will contribute to the overall success of their community and the Canadian society at large. We hope that AREF will play a role in assisting these future leaders achieve their goals,” said Sameeh Salama, President of AREF.
AREF is currently funded through generous contributions of community leaders who place a high value on education and in producing successful and highly motivated Muslim leaders. AREF continues to call out to leaders within Edmonton and surrounding areas for funds to help build the endowment fund. Scholarships offered by AREF will be awarded in three different categories and will range from $1000 to $3000 in value. The scholarships will be for the January 2015 winter semester and students are asked to apply prior to the deadline of September 15th, 2014.
Other unique plans for AREF include an awards Gala on November 7, 2014 featuring author and physician Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, MD, MPH, who has overcome many personal hardships, including poverty and violence, to become one of the most outspoken, prominent and beloved educators and public speakers on peace and development in the Middle East.

All monies raised are invested in an endowment fund. The profit made through this fund is disbursed to successful award recipients.
